Geocaching is a fun way for students as it is a digital scavenger hunt. Students use an app called the Geocache to find coordinates of mystery cache items hidden in an area.
For example, students will be able to use geocaching and the phonetic alphabet to find and decode at least three messages by the end of the class period.
Geocache can additionally be used to contain secret messages that must be decoded. In ROTC classes, the Phonetic Alphabet is taught for students to decode messages when on duty. Geocaching can be incorporated to find the messages using the Geocache app. Students will then scan a QR code, and either listen or read the message to decode what it says. After decoding the message, students will complete a Google Form to type what their message said.
Scanning a QR code will be easy for learners to use as QR codes are prominently used on campus. The Geocache app may have difficulties understanding at first as it is a new app but preparing learners to use the software would include practicing the app as a class for a few days before the lesson. A web browser will also be needed to access the Google Form with the messages to be decoded. Web browser is software that will be easy for learners to use, and most are Google Chrome or Safari. Most students have previous knowledge and experience using Google Forms, but a review on the software would be helpful to prepare learners to use it.
